What Is Metvix Photodynamic Therapy?
Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) with Metvix is the gold standard treatment in dermatology for Actinic Keratosis (AKs) and Non-Melanoma Skin Cancers (NMSCs) including Superficial Basal Cell Carcinoma (SBCC). It is widely considered the most effective treatment option for these conditions, with the lowest rate of recurrence compared to alternatives.
PDT combines a light-sensitising cream with a targeted red light to selectively destroy abnormal skin cells while leaving surrounding healthy tissue unaffected.

How Metvix PDT Works
The skin is first prepared by gently removing any scales or crusts from the affected area. Metvix cream is then applied and left to penetrate the skin for approximately 3 hours. The treated area is then exposed to a specialised red light (AK Light) for 7 to 10 minutes, activating the cream and destroying the abnormal cells. Some patients experience a stinging or burning sensation during the light exposure phase.
* TREATS: Actinic keratosis (AKs), superficial basal cell carcinoma (SBCC) and other non-melanoma skin cancers
* TIME: Approximately 3 to 4 hours including cream penetration time
* DOWNTIME: Redness, swelling and crusting lasting approximately one week
* RESULTS: Effective clearance of lesions with the lowest recurrence rate of available treatment options

Metvix PDT is recognised in dermatology as the most effective treatment for actinic keratosis and non-melanoma skin cancers due to its high clearance rates and low recurrence compared to other options.
Left untreated, these lesions can progress into Squamous Cell Cancer (SCC). Early treatment is strongly recommended following a diagnosis.
Following treatment, you can expect redness, swelling and crusting in the treated area for approximately one week as the skin heals. We will provide full aftercare guidance at your appointment.
